Canberra's Hidden Gems

You’re probably already familiar with Parliament House and the National Gallery – fantastic stuff. But Canberra is jam-packed with quirky and off-the-beaten-path experiences that are often pushed aside in favour of more famous landmarks.

Take our advice and be sure to check out some of Canberra’s secret wildlife spots, unexpectedly cool hangouts and generally underrated things to do in the Aussie capital.

National Arboretum Canberra

The National Arboretum is where it’s at. Think 44,000 trees, panoramic views, and more serenity than Bonnie Doon. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or simply exploring, this green oasis will make you forget you’re only minutes from the city.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

Hanging to see kangaroos, emus, and maybe even a platypus? Get yourself to Tidbinbilla! It’s like a safari, but without the hefty price tag. Wander the trails, take in the Indigenous heritage, and get a first-hand look at some genuine Aussie wildlife. You’re bound to see some roos but if you’re extra lucky, you might even glimpse a platypus.

Old Bus Depot Markets

Sundays = Old Bus Depot Markets. Brimming with vintage finds, street eats, and handmade goodies, you’re sure to find something special. Whether you’re into art, food or quirky finds – you won’t want to skip this.

Mount Stromlo Observatory

Not only does this spot serve up epic city views, but it’s also your gateway to the stars. Join one of their stargazing sessions and lose yourself while you marvel at just how teeny-tiny we really are.

The National Carillon

Looking for something a little different? On Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, the National Carillon’s bells ring out across Lake Burley Griffin, setting the perfect soundtrack to your day. To hear it in person is quite special. Bring a mate, pack a picnic, and enjoy the free tunes while pretending you’re living in a movie montage. Also a fabulous spot to watch the sunset.

Canberra Glassworks

Want to get artsy? Check out Canberra Glassworks, where you can watch glassblowers in action or maybe even try it yourself. It’s the best way to tap into your creative side, this side of Italy.

Lake Tuggeranong

Okay, so everyone heads to Lake Burley Griffin, but Lake Tuggeranong? It’s the low-key, chill cousin. Come here if you’re after some peace and quiet, a scenic walk, or a picnic away from the crowds. It’s all the good vibes, minus the masses of tourist buses.

The Cotter Dam

Last but not least, get yourself out to The Cotter Dam for a full-on nature escape. Less than 30 minutes from the city, you’ll find hiking trails, swimming spots, and picnic-perfect scenery.

Canberra’s got more than politics and museums up its sleeve, so next time you’re in town, skip the usual and dive into these underrated gems. Whether you’re looking to connect with nature, snap some street food inspo, or just escape the tourist traps, these experiences are guaranteed to make your trip unforgettable.
